To send an image across the internet, two factors have to be considered... To start
First, open the image in your image editing program. ( Usually supplied with your camera or scanner )
If you do not have a suitable program, then download this free application.

This is the authors description; ' IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP.2 ' He modestly fails to mention that it is also one of the most powerful and easy-to-use image programs available anywhere!

Anyhow - you should be now looking at your treasured picture of Great Aunty Mabel or whatever.

Like so...

( This image is 300 pixels wide x 316 pixels high 278kb )

Look for the 'image' button on the tool bar ( usually at the top of your application )
Click on 'image' then 'information' a screen should pop up informing you ( among other things ) of the size of Great Aunty Mabel.
If this size is anything like 1000000 x 1000000 pixels the chances are you will not be able to send it across the internet. ( FYI - This site is designed to be viewed at 800 x 600 pixels )
Oh dear what can we do ? We don't really want to keep Great Aunty Mabel cooped up in our PC, she wants to be able to roam freely around the world frightening young children and horses everywhere !
Fear not - all is not lost - click on the 'image' button again and then 'resize / resample'. In the window that pops up, make sure you tick the 'preserve aspect ratio' option, then enter your new size in the 'set new size option'
Around 300 pixels width is a good option. Cool - is that it ? - not quite. Go back to the tool bar, click the 'file' button and then select 'save as' In the box that pops up look for 'save as type' and select '.gif' then save to the directory of your choice. ( the .gif format although of lower quality than .jpg makes for a much smaller file size. FYI - The internet likes these formats, you could also use a .png but that is another story)

BRILLIANT! Do these tips apply to ALL image editing programs?...Er, No, but you should find similar commands in all those pesky dialogue boxes that appear when you click the buttons in the tool bar.

If you right click on an image and select 'properties', You will be able to ascertain the size.

How do I send Great Aunty Mabel by e-mail?

You could just send her as an attachment but I am afraid my Anti-Virus software would probably destroy her with extreme prejudice! - So I suggest you just cut-and-paste her into your e-mail...perhaps a maximum of three images per e-mail - have fun.
